NINE MADDIN HAUSER ATTORNEYS ARE SUPER LAWYERS

Nine Maddin Hauser attorneys have been named “Super Lawyers.”

Charles M. Lax received this honor in the field of Employee Benefits/ERISA.  Harvey R. Heller, Steven M. Wolock and Jennifer M. Grieco were noted for professional liability defense.  David E. BORDMAN SPEAKS TO STATE BAR OF MICHIGAN

Stuart M. Bordman recently presented “Offering Franchises:  Complying with the Requirements of the Federal Trade Commission Rule on Franchising and the Michigan Franchise Investment Law.”  Stuart presented this seminar for the State Bar of Michigan’s Anti-Trust, Franchising and Trade Regulation Section.

LEIB QUOTED IN DETROIT FREE PRESS

Michael S. Leib was quoted in The Detroit Free Press on January 24, 2008.  Mike was interviewed regarding the effect of a perjury conviction for a lawyer.  Mike has unique insights on the subject due to his extensive work with the Character and Fitness section of the State Bar of Michigan. 1-24-08

SOLLISH FEATURED ON FOX2 NEWS ON JANUARY 24, 2008

On January 24, 2008, Ron A. Sollish was interviewed on Fox2 News.  In light of the controversy surrounding the text messages allegedly exchanged between Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his Chief of Staff, Fox2 sought Ron’s insight on text messages and emails exchanged in the work place.  Ron noted that these emails can have an explosive impact in the course of litigation.  You can see Ron’s interview by clicking on www.myfoxdetroit.com. 1-24-08

FINK APPOINTED TO HUNTINGTON WOODS COMMISSION

Mark H. Fink has been appointed to a three-year term as a member of the Huntington Woods Historic District Commission, effective January 1, 2008.  Mark will also continue his work as a member of the Huntington Woods Historic District Study Committee. 1-1-08

HARRELL JOINS FIRM

The Firm is proud to announce that Michelle C. Harrell has joined us in our litigation practice.  Ms. Harrell received her bachelor of science degree in accounting summa cum laude from the University of Detroit in 1990, and her juris doctorate cum laude from Wayne State University Law School in 1993.  While at Wayne State, Ms. Harrell participated in moot court competitions and received three American Jurisprudence awards.  Michelle is a barrister in the American Inns of Court, Oakland County Chapter, a mentor in the Oakland County Bar Association mentor program, and an Oakland County Circuit Court case evaluator (complex commercial neutral).  Ms. Harrell concentrates her practice in the areas of complex commercial, real estate and family law litigation.

ROSCHEK JOINS FIRM

The Firm is proud to announce that Courtney D. Roschek has joined the Firm as an associate.  Courtney received her bachelor of arts magna cum laude from Western Michigan University in 2004.  She earned her juris doctorate magna cum laude from Michigan State University College of Law in 2007.  While in law school, she was an active member of MSU Law’s Moot Court Advocacy Board and Trial Practice Institute and received the Carolyn Stell Award from the Women Lawyers Association.  Previously, Ms. Roschek worked with the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan in developing and conducting the certification program for trial attorneys wishing to use the shared advance technology courtroom.

16TH ANNUAL TAX SYMPOSIUM A HUGE SUCCESS

On Saturday, October 6, 2007, the Firm held its 16th Annual Tax Symposium.  This was one of the best attended symposiums ever.  After Michael Maddin’s overview of the economy and its tax implications, several members of the Firm provided insightful information to the group.  The Firm extends a huge thanks to all who attended.  Click on the link below to view pictures of the event. 10-6-07

FIRM SUPPORTS INSURANCE AGENTS OF AMERICA; MITCHELL WRITES INAUGURAL ARTICLE

The Firm has become one of the original sponsors of a new insurance industry group, Insurance Agents of America.  The group focuses on new and hot topic issues facing insurance agents, brokers and companies throughout the country.  Richard Mitchell has written for the inaugural publication.  Mr. Mitchell is a member of the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters Society and is the past president of the Greater Detroit Chapter of that organization.

HAUSER PUBLISHED IN AICPA TAX INSIDER

Michael Hauser has written an article entitled “Dealer Status and the Condominium Conversion” for the AICPA Tax Insider.  Mr. Hauser has written several articles throughout the course of the year for various tax publications and has gained the respect of his peers in the area.  Congratulations, Michael.

FRENKEL PUBLISHES TWO ARTICLES

Martin Frenkel recently published an article in the National Mortgage Broker E-Newsletter regarding the selection and management of outside counsel.  Mr. Frenkel also recently published an article for the Michigan Contractors and Builders.  This article also addressed the selection of attorneys and what to look for in the contractor’s or builder’s relationship with the attorney.  Congratulations, Marty.

LAX COMPLETES TERM ON IRS ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Chuck Lax has completed his 3-year term as a member of the IRS Advisory Committee, the “Advisory Committee on Tax Exempt Entities and Government Entities (“ACT”).” This is an IRS committee that was formed to provide an organized public forum for discussion of relevant issues to enable the IRS to receive regular input with respect to the development and implementation of tax administration issues. Additionally, Chuck was the project leader of a 46-page report presented to the IRS entitled “Improving Compliance for Adopters of Pre-Approved Plans.” As part of this committee work, Chuck interacted with the highest executives of the Internal Revenue Service. HAUSER PUBLISHED IN JOURNAL OF REAL ESTATE TAXATION

Michael Hauser has published an article entitled “Dealer Status and a Condominium Conversion” in the 2nd quarter 2007 issue of the Journal of Real Estate Taxation. Michael has published several articles on related topics and has gained wide respect amongst his peers for his extensive expertise in the area of taxation. 07/2007

KAPLOW ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN PROGRAM OF LEAVE A LEGACY

Robert Kaplow has become a community partner of the Southeast Michigan Program of LEAVE A LEGACY. By doing so, Rob has further maintained his commitment to the community by supporting and promoting the need for employees and citizens to leave a charitable bequest in their will or estate plan. Founded in 1997, the Southeast Michigan Chapter of LEAVE A LEGACY is a campaign conducted by the National Committee on Planned Giving to inspire people to make charitable bequests, a type of planned gift to be distributed sometime in the future to a charity meaningful to the donor. LEAVE A LEGACY is a national broad based community campaign that involves numerous types of non-profit groups and is conducted by professionals who assist donors with charitable estate planning. 07/2007

DORF AND MADDIN ELECTED TO BOARD OF THE JEWISH FEDERATION

Stuart Dorf and Martin Maddin have been elected as directors to sit on the board of the Young Adult Division of The Jewish Federation. Congratulations to both Stuart and Marty. 07/2007

DORF INTERVIEWED ON WWJ

Stuart Dorf was recently interviewed by Bill Stevens of WWJ Radio regarding his extensive charitable and volunteer work. In the past, Stuart has met with members of the United States Congress and has been a leader in the fight to abolish hunger. 07/2007

JACOBS SPEAKS TO MICHIGAN MORTGAGE LENDERS ASSOCIATION

John Jacobs recently spoke to the Michigan Mortgage Lenders Association at a seminar dedicated to providing the latest information and guidance regarding “non-traditional lending.”  John discussed the issue from a regulatory standpoint.  He explained the requirements in order to comply with this guidance.  He also discussed disclosure and audit considerations for lenders and brokers  Most importantly, John spoke about state and regulatory definitions of “non-traditional lending.” 05/2007

DORF NAMED VOLUNTEER OF THE WEEK BY THE DETROIT FREE PRESS

Stuart Dorf was named Volunteer of the Week in the April 21, 2007 edition of the Detroit Free Press for his work running a homeless shelter in conjunction with Congregation Shaarey Zedek.  Stuart’s volunteer work is extensive, including his efforts in the fight against hunger which have gained him meetings with members of the United States Congress  He is also active with Congregation Shaarey Zedek. 05/2007

REID AMONG PADDLEBALL ELITE

James M. Reid IV recently placed 4th in the National Paddleball Tournament, Division C.  This means that James ranks approximately 20th in the sport in the world. 05/2007

STOTLAND OBTAINS DIRECTED VERDICT

Alex Stotland obtained a directed verdict at the close of plaintiff’s proofs in a case in which our client sold his business interests to a former partner and was alleged to have formed a competing business.  Although the case initially involved multiple claims against the client, Alex was successful in obtaining the dismissal of most of those claims prior to trial.  At the conclusion of plaintiff’s proofs, the court held that plaintiff had failed to satisfy its burden of proof on the only remaining count, a breach of contract claim. 05/2007

LEIB AND FINK WIN IN COURT OF APPEALS

Mike Leib and Mark Fink prevailed in the Court of Appeals in an employment discrimination matter.  The court held that the trial court had reached a correct result based on the merits of the case and remanded for entry of an order dismissing the action with prejudice. 05/2007

SAPERSTEIN WINS WISCONSIN ARBITRATION

David Saperstein prevailed, in total, in an arbitration held in Rice Lake, Wisconsin.  The case involved a claim of misrepresentation against our client, an insurance agent.  The issue revolved around the suitability of the purchase of universal life insurance.  At the conclusion of the arbitration, the arbitrator found for the defense on all claims. 05/2007
