Law Students

Maddin Hauser's summer associates participate in a ten-week program that introduces them, in practical terms, to the working life of practicing attorneys. The firm recruits law students during the autumn on-campus interview programs at law schools in Michigan, but also welcomes resumes from students at other schools who plan to work and live in the area after graduation. Recruiters look for bright, independent, responsible, and self-starting individuals who are eager to learn and contribute to our teams. Maddin Hauser places a high importance on academic performance, but also considers relevant experience such as law review, moot court, extracurricular activities and previous work experience.

The Maddin Hauser summer associate experience is relevant and educational. Our goal for each summer associate to leave our program with a full understanding of what life will be like once they graduate and become a first-year associate in a law firm. Associates are not confined to an office all summer writing memos about points of law, nor do they spend entire days at "group lunches" or other social events. Instead, they spend the bulk of their time engaged in the "real life" attorney activities of attending client meetings, trials, depositions and negotiating sessions and contributing to strategy and planning sessions.

Room to grow and explore. Maddin Hauser's summer associate program gives aspiring attorneys the opportunity to gain exposure to a variety of practice areas, so that they can choose the field of law that best fits their talents and interests. Summer associates are not assigned to a particular practice area, but are given assignments from each of the fields represented in the firm. This practice gives the associate a broader experience and a better understanding of how the different specialties are interrelated, while also giving them direct contact with as many shareholders in the firm as possible.

In addition, regular associate group meetings give the participants an opportunity to share their ideas and thoughts about the program and other aspects of the firm's practice as well as to see how their work directly influences the direction and future of Maddin Hauser.

Mentoring System. Each Maddin Hauser summer associate is paired with an attorney mentor, who is responsible for managing the associate's workload and ensuring that they obtain the most possible out of their experience at the firm. The mentor will be involved with each project the associate is given from inception to the end product, will counsel them on the workings of the firm and how to interface with colleagues and clients, and will ensure that the associate is being given an appropriate workload. In addition, the mentor will assist the associate in getting to know the other attorneys and shareholders socially, whether through group learning sessions, informal lunches, baseball games, or other social outings. At the end of a summer associate's program, the mentor will consult with the shareholders and attorneys that have worked with the associate to develop an end-of-program evaluation.
